A bronze seal for the Department of the Treasury is shown at the U.S. Treasury building in Washington, U.S., January 20, 2023. Treasury yields, which move inversely to prices, hovered near their highest levels since 2007 on Thursday, continuing a bond market selloff that has pushed yields up by more than 40 basis points since the start of October. At close to 5%, 10-year Treasury yields are significantly above their fair value of 4.2% to 4.3%, Goldman Sachs noted. Treasuries will likely rally as the economy hits a "pothole" in the fourth quarter, Goldman Sachs said. "The key risk to this trade is that U.S. data is stronger than expected leading yields to fall less than our strategist expects," Goldman Sachs wrote.

The UAW union late last week went on strike to pressure the "Big Three" to raise worker wages. The strength of President Biden's economic message could hinge on the outcome of the strike. Biden has sought to sharpen his 2024 economic pitch, but voters aren't fully sold on his message. AdvertisementAdvertisementBiden is now sitting in the Oval Office, and the United Auto Workers strike is giving him the most challenging labor crisis of his presidency, as the economic pitch for his reelection bid could sink or swim depending on the outcome. And over the last — the past decade, auto companies have seen record profits, including the last few years, because of the extraordinary skill and sacrifices of the UAW workers," he said at the White House.

The memo, which was first reported by Axios, does not mention Mr. Trump, and the restrictions apply to all candidates who aren’t participating — a category that also includes those who didn’t meet the donor and polling thresholds to qualify. In practice, though, it will affect Mr. Trump more significantly than anyone else, since he is the front-runner in the Republican primary and is actively trying to snub the debate while still getting its benefits. Mr. Trump’s decision to skip the first Republican National Committee-sanctioned debate of the 2024 race was a slap in the face to both the party and Fox News. Mr. Trump has frequently complained about Fox News’s coverage of him. At least three senior members of Mr. Trump’s campaign — Chris LaCivita, Jason Miller and Steven Cheung — plan to attend the debate in person, The Times has reported.

Investors who want to lock in high rates on longer-term Treasurys may want to act sooner rather than later, according to Wells Fargo Investment Institute. The 10-year Treasury is currently yielding around 4.2%. "We think 10-year Treasury yields in the 4% to 4.5% zone may represent a fixed-income opportunity for investors who have been seeking higher yields over the course of the last 15 years," he added. "It makes sense that investors would require a higher yield when purchasing government debt in the wake of these announcements," he said. In addition to 10-year Treasurys, the bank has also lowered its equities allocation and "parked" those funds in short-term Treasurys, getting yields over 5% in 3-month, 6-month and 12-month maturities, Wren wrote.

SHARK HEART: A Love Story, by Emily HabeckIn Emily Habeck’s beguiling first novel, Lewis and Wren have been married for only a few weeks when Lewis is diagnosed with a Carcharodon carcharias mutation. That explains his nose turning to nothing but cartilage, his intense thirst and appetite, and all those loose molars. Over the course of six months, Lewis’s limbs turn to fins in an agonizing process of bone agglutination.

Investors shouldn't chase the current FOMO-fueled rally in stocks, Wells Fargo warned. Core inflation accelerated 0.2% in June, and though payrolls rose by a less-than-expected 209,000 jobs last month, the labor market remains resilient, a factor that could potentially drive inflation higher. "If inflation's descent flattens out and reverses as interest rates rise higher, we believe the sectors that have driven this rally should be vulnerable to sharp pullbacks," Wren warned. Wells Fargo predicted the S&P 500 would end the year between 4,600-4,800. In addition to stubborn inflation, investors could also be slammed with a corporate earnings recession, Morgan Stanley has warned.

The problem is that birds are in profound trouble, both on our suffering planet and in this rapidly changing neighborhood. And as I watch developers slaughter tree after neighborhood tree, I can offer nest boxes to compensate in some small way for the loss of natural nest sites. I walked to the jungly back of the yard to check on the nest box they’d already claimed. The wren nest in the chickadee box came to a bad end, too, as it turns out. One of the eggs had been pierced — almost certainly by another house wren — and ants had claimed that box, too.

Residential and commercial real estate have more pain coming as financial conditions tighten, Wells Fargo said. Commercial real estate is struggling as work-from-home trends remain popular, the bank said. Meanwhile, in commercial real estate, office demand is still way down as work-from-home trends remain popular. "We expect commercial real estate to underperform on a relative basis in the near-to-intermediate term," Wren said of the sector. Meanwhile, commercial real estate prices are in danger of falling dramatically, with Morgan Stanley strategists predicting a 40% peak-to-trough decline.

Weeks later, Mr. Trump is the former President Trump. Instead, in a brief televised address shortly before 2:30 a.m., Mr. Trump furiously laid down his postelection lie. For weeks, Mr. Trump had been peppering him with tips of fraud that, upon investigation by federal authorities, proved baseless. Strategists expect profit at S&P 500 (.SPX) companies to have dropped 6.4% in the second quarter from a year earlier, according to Refinitiv data. Morgan Stanley:Much of the stock market rally this year has been driven by a price-to-earnings expansion, signaling investors likely remain unconcerned about near-term earnings pressure. Still, "better-than-feared" earnings are not going to be good enough in Q2 considering stocks have become more expensive, the strategists say. Goldman Sachs:Companies will likely be able to beat or surpass "the low bar" set for the second quarter. This suggests a "muted market reaction" to Q2 earnings is likely, given robust gains in stocks since the first quarter and an "overweight" equity positioning, the bank says.

The Consumer Price Index (CPI) gained just 0.2% last month, the Labor Department said on Wednesday, lifted by rises in gasoline prices as well as rents, which offset a decrease in prices of used motor vehicles. Opinion | The Nature of Joy

Joy is not a given in the natural world. The baby rabbit I watched cavorting in the pollinator garden was almost certainly born in the nest next to our backyard brush pile. I have seen no other survivor from that litter, and their mother is still the lone adult rabbit in the yard. I think the ever-present threat my wild neighbors live with must tell us something about the nature of joy. Follow The New York Times Opinion section on Facebook, Twitter (@NYTopinion) and Instagram.
